Derek's New Zealand Blog 2012

Sunday 8th January

Kay & Brent drove me around Dunedin to get a SIM card for phone and a couple of 4Gb memory sticks, then a visit to the famous Dunedin Railway Station, before the drive up the steep gravel track to summit of Mount Cargill with its spectacular views over Otago Harbour and Otago Peninsular, from Aramoana to Dunedin City and beyond. Not to be missed.

Quick return to Kay's place in Concord, Dunedin, for refreshments before the journey to celebrate Ryland's birthday, along State Highway One, through Milton, Balclutha & Owaka, to a farm in Owaka Valley. Ryland's Mum, Leesa, will be one of Kay's bridesmaid at her wedding in February. The kids enjoyed their birthday party and the adults enjoyed the barbeque. I had a good natter with the party goers about New Zealand life, many of them cattle & sheep farmers. A lovely sunny day, very warm until the evening when the wind was chilly. Returned to Concord along the Owaka Valley road, which was very quiet with a good surface and has only been 'sealed' (tarmaced) for a couple of years. Road from Owaka to Balclutha also very quiet and wide, with a good surface. State Highway One, from Balclutha to to Dunedin also a two way road, but wide and straight where possible with passing lanes. All villages & towns very small with wide roads and single storey dwelling, reminding me of the United States. The jet lag finally got to me on the car journey to Concord. My head was constantly nodding. A 100km trip each way.

Sunny, no rain, 25 degrees C, 50% cloud
